What is the difference between AT and ATX power supplies? ▼
AT PSUs use two separate 6-pin P8 and P9 connectors and feature a hard physical on/off switch - power is cut directly at the unit. ATX PSUs use a single 20- or 24-pin connector and allow software-controlled shutdown. AT is the older standard for legacy PCs; ATX is the modern norm. We stock both, including ATX-to-AT converter kits.
Note: our AT PSUs use standard colour-coded wiring, which may differ from some older units such as the SPI-300G. This is fine - the electrical output is identical and our units safely replace them.
The connectors on my replacement PSU don't match - what should I do? ▼
This is common with replacement PSUs and is almost always solvable with an adaptor. Key things to check:
- 20-pin vs 24-pin main connector: Most PSUs ship with a 20+4 pin connector. The extra 4-pin section clips to the side of the 20-pin block. Do not confuse it with the square 4-pin P4 CPU connector - it looks similar but fits a different socket. A 24-pin connector can safely plug into a 20-pin motherboard socket with the extra 4 pins left hanging, as long as no nearby components are in the way.
- 8-pin connectors: Two distinct types exist - the 8-pin (4+4) EPS 12V (motherboard CPU socket) and the 8-pin (6+2) PCI-Express (graphics card). They look alike but are not interchangeable.
- Molex or SATA in tight spaces: If there is no clearance behind the drives, a right-angled Molex or SATA adaptor resolves the issue.
- Other missing connectors (Molex, SATA etc...): Other connectors can be added using adaptors. Ask if required.
We supply a wide range of adaptors and extensions. Browse our cables & adaptors or email us for a recommendation. If you have already ordered your PSU, ask for a free adaptor.
How much wattage do I need from a replacement PSU? ▼
For a standard home or office PC, 250-350W is typically sufficient. Gaming machines and industrial servers may need 400-500W. A PSU with higher wattage than your original will not harm your PC - the system only draws the power it needs. Higher wattage also improves system stability and allows for future upgrades. The wattage is printed on the PSU label and often encoded in the model number.
Does the voltage setting matter, and how do I check it? ▼
Yes - this is important. Three scenarios to be aware of:
- Auto-range (full range): Switches automatically between 110V and 230V. No red switch near the inlet - no action needed.
- Manual switch: A small red switch near the power socket selects 110V or 230V. Set it to 230V before use in the UK.
- Fixed 230V: Pre-set with no switch. Not suitable for 110V countries.
Always check the "AC Input" information on the PSU label before connecting to mains power.
Does the position of the PSU fan matter? ▼
In most cases, the fan position does not affect cooling - hot air is drawn out of the case regardless of fan orientation. Modern PSUs typically use a quieter 120mm top-mounted fan. The exception is very compact or 2U chassis where a top fan may lack clearance; in those cases a PSU with an 80mm front-facing fan may be needed. Contact us if you are unsure.
Will my replacement PSU fit physically in my case? ▼
Our PSUs are designed so that most screw holes align with standard chassis mounts. Since these are not always direct OEM replacements, minor differences can occasionally occur:
- Some units include a metal adaptor bracket for screw-hole differences - noted clearly on the product page.
- The chassis cut-out shape may prevent installation if the fan, switch, or power inlet is in a different position. The on/off switch can sometimes be removed to allow fitting.
- Some chassis use a hook-and-indent system. If our PSU lacks the indent, the hook may need to be flattened to allow the unit to sit flush.
Check our PSU Measurements guide or email us with photos before ordering if you are unsure.
My new PSU doesn't power on - how do I test it? ▼
All our PSUs are tested before dispatch, so a fault on arrival is rare. To test independently of your PC, use the paperclip test: disconnect the PSU from the PC, bridge the green wire (PS_ON) and any black wire (Ground) on the 24-pin connector with a bent paperclip, then reconnect to mains power.
- If the fan spins - the PSU is working. The issue likely lies elsewhere (e.g. faulty motherboard).
- If the fan does not spin - the unit may be faulty. Contact us to arrange a replacement or refund.
Intermittent issues can sometimes stem from an electrical incompatibility between the PSU and motherboard rather than insufficient wattage. Get in touch and we will help diagnose it.
What is a 1U Flex PSU and what devices use it? ▼
A 1U Flex PSU is a compact unit designed for slim 1U rack-mounted servers, small form factor PCs, and EPOS/POS systems. Physically smaller than standard ATX units, they are commonly used in Shuttle cube systems, thin clients, and small server builds. Browse our 1U Flex PSU range.
How do I measure my existing PSU to find the right replacement? ▼
Our PSU Measurements guide provides dimensional diagrams for all common form factors - ATX, SFX, 1U Flex, PS2, AT, and more. Measure your existing unit's width, height, and depth and compare against the guide before ordering. Please ask us if you are unsure.
I still can't find the right part - can you help? ▼
Absolutely - expert support is something we pride ourselves on. Email mail@vanda-trading.com with:
- Your device make and model number
- The part or model number from your existing PSU label
- Photos of the PSU, its label, the connectors, and the inside of the chassis
We can usually suggest a straightforward solution - an exact match, a suitable substitute, or the right adaptor to bridge any differences.
